Foggy Driving: Stay Safe, Stay Smart (Video Script)
Driving in fog? Not a great idea. Weather can seriously impact road safety, and January is the foggiest month in the U.S. and Canada.
Best move? Stay put until conditions improve. But if you absolutely have to drive in fog, follow these key safety tips:
-
Slow down — rushing in fog is a recipe for disaster. Turn off cruise control and stay in full control of your speed.
-
Lights on, but NOT high beams. High beams create glare and make visibility worse. Stick to low beams and fog lights if your car has them.
-
Give yourself extra space. Keep a bigger gap between you and other cars—front, back, and sides. Fog reduces reaction time, so more space = more safety.
-
Use road lines as your guide. Stick to the white and yellow lane markers to avoid drifting.
-
Zero visibility? Get off the road. Find a safe place to park, turn on your hazard lights, and wait it out. If pulling over isn’t an option, move as far to the side as possible, turn on hazards, turn off headlights (so others don’t think you’re moving), and set your parking brake.
Driving is risky enough—fog just makes it worse. If you can, wait until it clears. Stay smart, stay safe!
